Structural Preservation Systems (SPS) installed 64 permanent rock anchors at 326-330 West 40th Street near the Lincoln Tunnel in the borough of Manahttan in New York City for new construction of the more than 30-story Sheraton and Marriot Hotels. The anchors were approximately 30 feet in length with double corrosion protection and a capacity of 150 kips. Despite site restrictions in an urban environment that presented access challenges, SPS finished the job ahead of schedule. SPS overcame material delivery challenges with the use of a 10,000-pound variable reach forklift that was used to pick deliveries from the bottom of a 15-foot excavation to the delivery trucks on the street. Access issues at the drilling locations were overcome by the use of a versatile midsize track-mounted drill rig.
During operations, the general contractor found that one corner of the site contained rock at a lower elevation than expected, so SPS was called on to re-fit its drill rig on site to accommodate the installation of ten 40-ton mini-caissons socketed into bedrock. SPS' diverse crew and equipment was able to respond quickly to the client's dilemma as well as save time and money by capitalizing on their experience and expertise.
